Presidential Hopefulls With No Hope. – Was Thompson Ever Really In?
Seriously, did anyone actually believe Fred Thompson was really running for President? (Fred Thompson Withdraws from the Presidential Race.) This has to be one of the most asinine campaigns I have ever witnessed. I have no problem with people that are running for president that are doing so to make a point, bring up a topic or fight for their cause. However, Fred Thompson gets the Dick Broom award for wasting everybody’s with his pickle smoking campaign.
Ralph Nader never believed he would ever win, but he did bring awareness to a number of things he cared about. I also thought Ross Perot brought things to the presidential race that neither of the other candidates wanted to talk about. This year, we really could use one of these candidates to bring up the topics of China, US economy and the dozen other things that have a daily impact on our lives that nobody wants to discuss because the solutions are too hard and can’t win them votes. I remember watching a re-broadcast of the Carter-Reagan debates (now as a registered voting adult) where Carter was laying out a brutal plan for recovery involving everybody suffering a little in the short run for long-term gains. The audience had no clue what he was talking about and Reagan the brilliant masterful speaker that he was pretty much said, “I don’t know what he is talking about, I just know I don’t want any new taxes.” Crowd goes wild, Reagan runs away with the election and no politician ever tries to answer a question for real again. Politics becomes relagated to the charming used car salesmen types. (And don’t be fooled, Bush Jr. charms those around him on a regular basis, he just doesn’t try to do the general public.)
This is why I am very much in favor of these fridge candidates. In fact, I often support the third party candidates snubbing the ridiculous two party system we have in this country. Personally, I feel it is a controlled monopoly designed to keep the status quo political dynamics already in place. Nothing worse than a real outsider trying to disrupt things.
So I say, if you know you have no chance of winning the Presidency but have a real cause, I say run! But if you are like Thompson and have absolutely nothing to contribute, stay out and let the press focus on more important candidates.
